Founded in 2015, the Department of Psychiatry at Hind Institute of Medical Sciences, Sitapur has undergone significant growth, both in its capacity and range of services. With the escalating patient demands and the growing recognition of psychiatry’s crucial role in holistic healthcare, the department has expanded its activities accordingly. Since 2022, it has been offering NMC-accredited postgraduate courses in psychiatry, including the MD program, reflecting its commitment to providing comprehensive mental health education and care.
Our department is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of mental health disorders through education, research, and compassionate patient care. As an integral part of the college community, we are committed to promoting mental wellness and reducing stigma surrounding mental illness.

Services Offered by the Psychiatry Department

Undergraduate Medical Education:
The Department of Psychiatry is actively involved in the education of M.B.B.S. students. Through a combination of didactic lectures and clinical postings, students receive comprehensive instruction in the field of psychiatry.

Post Graduate Course:
The MD Psychiatry program spans three years, offering a blend of clinical exposure and academic depth to prepare future mental health professionals.
MD Psychiatry students undergo rotations in Medicine, Neurology, Casualty, and other relevant departments. The department supervises thesis work for MD/MS students in related specialties.
It provides training to MBBS medical students, interns, and externs, along with instruction for nursing students. Academic activities include management rounds, teaching programs, lectures, and ward case discussions. The department conducts training sessions for professionals and non-professionals in mental health, covering awareness to research levels. It offers services to both community-oriented and community-centred programs. The department develops health education materials for professionals and the general public in the field of mental health.

Library Resources:
Our library is well-equipped with study materials covering mental health and psychological aspects. Students, faculty members, researchers, and staff have access to a wide array of national and international journals. The library boasts an extensive collection of books on mental illness, psychological counselling, and psychotherapy to support research, teaching, and training activities. Additionally, the library offers internet access to various journals, online educational resources, and e-books, facilitating in-depth exploration and knowledge acquisition in psychiatry.

Outpatient Department (OPD):
Operating from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm every Monday to Saturday, our outpatient department provides comprehensive care to patients with mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Our qualified consultants offer psychological tests including the Rorschach test, TAT, Bhatia battery, IPDE, and 16 PF, as well as rating scales like HDRS, MMSE, BPRS, YMRS, AUDIT, and YBOCS. Counselling and psychotherapy services are also available to address various conditions.

In Patient Ward (IPD):
The average occupancy in Psychiatry ward is quite good. The various procedures administered to Psychiatry inpatients as a part of therapeutic intervention include:
Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (MECT)
Relaxation & others Exercises
Narco Analysis
Psychotherapeutic Intervention etc.
The inpatient unit is complemented by a Pathology Lab for routine blood and urine investigations. In addition to these services, the Psychiatry Department is actively engaged in teaching M.B.B.S. students through didactic lectures and clinical training.
The training in psychiatry equips students with essential skills such as patient interviewing, rapport-building, psychiatric case history taking, mental status assessment, and diagnosis and management of common psychiatric disorders. Emphasis is placed on principles of consultation-liaison psychiatry, preventive, promotive, creative, and rehabilitative services for psychiatric patients in both family and community settings. Students are trained to handle psychiatric emergencies and refer complicated or rare psychiatric cases to specialists.
The Inpatient ward consists of separate facilities for male and female patients, each with 15 beds. Our emergency services operate round-the-clock, supported by a 24-hour telephonic helpline.
We offer specialized services including:
Electroencephalography (EEG): Used for patients with organic brain pathology.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): Administered for severe psychiatric illnesses and suicidal patients, utilizing modified ECT in collaboration with the anesthesia team.
Biofeedback and Relaxation Therapy: Utilized for relaxation techniques.
Laboratory Equipment: Includes a Lithium Analyzer, Alcohol Breath Analyzer, and various psychological test equipment such as intelligence tests (VSMS, BHATIA BATTERY), projective tests (Rorschach test, TAT), and personality tests (IPDE, 16 PF, PEN INVENTORY).
These services and facilities contribute to our comprehensive approach to psychiatric care, education, and research, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality treatment and students are well-prepared to enter the field of psychiatry.

Specialized Treatment Programs:
The Psychiatry Department hosts Alcoholic Anonymous Meetings every Friday, providing support and guidance to individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. Additionally, we conduct Public Information Meetings periodically to raise awareness about mental health issues. Furthermore, we have initiated a Community Psychiatry Clinic at Satrikh, Barabanki, held weekly, to extend our services to underserved populations in the community.

11.Research and Publications:
The department is deeply committed to research across clinical psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, drug deaddiction, consultation-liaison psychiatry, community psychiatry, and psychometrics. Our department actively engages in both funded and non-funded research projects, addressing critical issues in mental health. We prioritize training our students in research methodologies, focusing on areas of national importance.
